This is a 10 October 2017 BBC story by Chris Baraniuk which looks at female code-breakers from Ada Lovelace onwards but with a focus on the past 100 years, i.e. from 1917, when the United States is just entering World War One.
Over the last 100 years, women have had significant, high-level roles in breaking secret codes – from Nazi ciphers to the secret messages of Al Capone’s gang – but their contribution is only just emerging
