Brenda, pregnant with her first child, was paying a visit to her obstetrician’s office. When the exam was over, she shyly began: “My husband wants me to ask you…”

“I know, I know,” the doctor interrupted, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder: “I get asked that all the time. Sex is fine until late in your.”

New Yorker elderly mother Joke

Gary Brantley

Former Teacher (Retired) (1998–2016)Oct 20

A New Yorker had an elderly mother on the West Coast. She lived alone and would frequently mention to her son that she was lonely. One day, the son entered a pet shop in Manhattan and told the owner that he needed a pet that would be good “company” for his lonely, older mother.
“Have I got the pet for you!” exclaimed the owner, “It’s a beautiful parrot that speaks five languages! He’s so entertaining, she’ll never be lonely.” “I’ll take it!” said the son, as the owner assured him that he could have it safely shipped across country.

A week passed, and the son was eager to hear how his mother was enjoying his gift. He called and after pleasantries, asked if his surprise had arrived. “Oh, yes, it arrived safely “ she assured him. “Well, how did you like it?” he asked. “It was delicious!” she replied.

“Delicious!?!, you ate that parrot? Mom, that bird could speak five languages!”

“Well, he should’ve said something.”

Dog & Leopard Joke

Mermelas Panagiotis

Senior Engineer at Hellenic Aerospace Industry (H.A.I.) (1997–present)Mon

One day a dog was lost in the jungle, at some point he found some bones and was trying to chew them.

Behind him a leopard sees him and slowly approaches to rush him, the dog smells her and immediately without turning his head to look behind thinks out loud…

“Mmmm that leopard I killed was delicious “.

Without second thought the leopard turns back and runs away terrified.

On a tree there was a monkey which saw the whole scene, so she started jumping from tree to tree and goes straight to find the leopard, when she does she tells her what happened before, that is, the dog was lying, he was bluffing.

Immediately the leopard angry and hungry says the monkey to get on her back and together they run back again to find the dog, the leopard with the monkey on her back.

Just before they arrive, the dog smells them and, terrified, does not know what to do, so again, without looking back, he thinks out loud …

“But where is this monkey? It’s been an hour since I sent her to bring me another leopard”

“What is truth?” said jesting Pilate, and would not stay for an answer.

The above quote is from Francis Bacon’s 1625 essay, Of Truth, in which he suggests “it is not the lie that passeth through the mind, but the lie that sinketh in and settleth in it that doth the hurt.”

“How amazing is this — scientists have discovered mushrooms that can devour plastic waste in a matter of weeks…plastic that would otherwise just be in the ocean forever.

Right now 91% of plastics we use can’t be recycled — and every minute a truckload-worth is dumped in the ocean, suffocating sea life and spreading pollutants across shores.

But scientists say these mushrooms could eat up to half of the plastic waste being dumped in the ocean — and they need your help to finish their groundbreaking research.

Scientist Dr Cullings is retiring from NASA this year to join the nonprofit Ocean Blue Project in their work to isolate and reproduce plastic-eaters for industrial use. They have projects planned in the US and New Zealand that need funding. If 5000 of us chip in, we can pay for the lab equipment they need to finish their research — and help rid the planet of plastic waste. Are you in?”

The urgent need to redistribute excess vaccines

While COVID-19 vaccines are helping Australia and other wealthy nations to chart a path out of the pandemic, these life-saving tools still aren’t accessible to a large percentage of the world’s population. If current trends continue, 19 low-income countries won’t reach 70 per cent vaccination until 2030.”

Karrina Kemp pays $585 rent for her home, but she’s living in a tent at the QLD border

By Caitlin Fitzsimmons October 3, 2021

“Karrina Kemp never expected to be living in a tent with three children, but that’s all she can afford while waiting to be allowed to cross the Queensland border.

Ms Kemp is one of more than 11,000 Queenslanders stranded in NSW or Victoria while waiting for border passes or exemptions to be allowed across the border. She is also one of several people who told The Sun-Herald they were sleeping in a tent or car as a result, mostly in NSW border towns and some in Victoria.”

Many e-cigarette vaping liquids contain toxic chemicals: new Australian research

October 12, 2021 Alexander Larcombe, Telethon Kids Institute

“Our study, published this week in The Medical Journal of Australia, found most e-liquids contained chemicals known to cause respiratory issues and lung damage when inhaled. Most contained ingredients that have since been banned by Australia’s drug regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

We also found all e-liquids contained substances for which the health effects of inhalation exposure are unknown.

It’s clear vaping isn’t safe, and e-cigarettes haven’t been approved as smoking cessation devices.

Most e-liquids we studied contained chemicals known to cause respiratory issues and lung damage when inhaled.”

Sydney’s public bus system is set to trial the biggest electric bus fleet in the country, while Perth’s network is powering up the green vehicles, too.

“The Sydney project is the first of its size backed by Australia’s Renewable Energy Agency, which has tipped in $5 million on behalf of the federal government.

Darren Miller, chief executive of ARENA, said buses and trucks accounted for 25% of transport-related carbon emissions and 5% of Australia’s total carbon emissions.”

Revealed: Australia’s worst climate culprits — corporate edition

Who are Australia’s worst climate culprits? We know the biggest emitters, but it’s a question of how toxic a role companies play in politics and public debate.

“We know who Australia’s biggest polluters are. Every year, the government publishes data on the largest sources of scope 1 greenhouse emissions (that is, directly produced as part of the production process of a facility) and scope 2 emissions (indirectly produced). Unsurprisingly, that list — led by AGL Energy — is dominated by large coal-fired power companies and gas companies.

But the list doesn’t capture scope 3 emissions (emissions produced indirectly by a business) and it particularly doesn’t capture the scope 3 emissions from the burning of Australian thermal coal exports around the world.”

Google to Pay Developers to Make Open Source Projects More Secure

Liam Tung October 4, 2021

“Google is investing $1 million in the Linux Foundation’s Secure Open Source (SOS) pilot program to make open source projects more secure. The program will reward developers financially for fortifying software against attacks and correcting potential bugs before they emerge. Google said the incentives range from $505 for “small improvements” to $10,000 or more for hardening software to prevent major vulnerabilities. SOS targets initiatives that proactively strengthen critical open source projects and defend infrastructure against application and supply-chain attacks, and intends to close the funding gap for largely voluntary software projects. According to Google, SOS is “the starting point for future efforts that will hopefully bring together other large organizations and turn it into a sustainable, long-term initiative under the OpenSSF (Open Source Security Foundation),” a cross-industry forum that collaborates on the improvement of open source software security.”

Becoming the Marginalian — after 15 years, Brain Pickings reborn

Brain Pickings was born on October 23, 2006 as an improbable idea in a young mind only just becoming literate in the language of life. Fifteen years hence, it is reborn as The Marginalian — reborn as what it has always been beneath the ill-fitting name chosen by a twenty-two-year-old immigrant in whose ear the tired puns and idioms of a non-native language rang fresh and full of wonder: an evolving record and ongoing celebration of my readings and my loves, of all that makes me feel most alive.”
