ACARA mathematics open letter
The following is an open letter about the draft changes to the maths component of the Australian Curriculum. You may view a list of signatories here.
“Open letter to Mr. David de Carvalho, CEO of ACARA, and the ACARA Board
On 29 April 2021, the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) released its draft revisions to the Australian Mathematics Curriculum, with a consultation period ending on 8 July 2021. We are a group of mathematicians, mathematics educators, educational psychologists, parents and members of the public who take an active interest in mathematics education and in the curriculum. We agree that the Mathematics Curriculum desperately requires reform; it is repetitious, disconnected, unambitious and is lacking in critical elements. We are pleased that efforts to reform the curriculum are underway. We are profoundly concerned, however, with the structure of the current draft and with many of the proposed changes within.”
Gambay: a map of Australia’s first languages
First Languages Australia in partnership with local language centres across Australia have developed an interactive map to display and promote the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages. The map, titled Gambay, translates to “together” in the Butchulla language of the Hervey Bay region in Queensland.
Gambay showcases over 780 languages, using data contributed by regional language centres and programs working directly with language communities around Australia.
Find out more about the map on Gambay website. Teachers’ notes are also available to use with the map compiled to assist teaching about Australia’s first languages across the curriculum.
John Daley’s parting gift should be read by every senior public servant, staffer, journalist and minister
By Bernard Keane Monday July 26, 2021
“For years now, the commentariat has lamented the dearth of good public policy reform in Australia, comparing the current generation of politicians with greater figures from the 1980s and 1990s — Hawke and Keating, and John Howard in his first two terms. It’s been much more rare for that lamentation to actually result in a serious analysis of why governments, both at the federal and state levels, are no longer as reformist as they used to be.
John Daley, one of Australia’s best public policy thinkers, has done exactly that in his final report for the Grattan Institute, which examines what failed and successful reforms of the last ten years have had in common — and what that tells us about impediments to reform in Australia. It’s a cracker of a report that should be bookmarked by every senior public servant, staffer, journalist and minister, even if they won’t necessarily like his conclusions.”

Hayne gets last laugh as “Your Future Your Super” laws deliver for small punters over big bank pals
by Harry Chemay | Jul 7, 2021 | Economy & Markets
‘The new “Your Future, Your Super” legislation avoided the most egregious of changes proposed by the LNP Government. YFYS will simplify and streamline the $3 trillion super system, fix “zombie accounts” and spark fund takeovers, writes Harry Chemay. The changes go some way to addressing a key question posed during the Hayne Royal Commission: “what do trustees do in the dark with our super?” ‘
Weird signs and ominous warnings as Australia’s millionaire ranks grow wildly
“Australia is positively brimming with millionaires. That’s good, right? But what’s behind the boom, and what lies ahead wealth-wise?
If you’ve got more than a million dollars, here’s the bad news: that’s no longer special. Australia is a nation of millionaires now. Our national wealth is exploding, and the average Aussie household holds $1 million in assets ($1.02 million to be precise), according to the ABS.
Millionaires, millionaires, everywhere you look. We have more millionaires per capita than everywhere except Switzerland. This chart measures wealth in US dollars and tells us that almost one in every 10 Australians has more than US$1 million in assets.”

Open Source Modeling Approach Cracks Code of Simulating Low-Inertia Power Systems
National Renewable Energy Laboratory
July 20, 2021
Scientists at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the University of California, Berkeley have developed an open source computation analysis method for modeling utility-level renewable power systems. The Scalable Integrated Infrastructure Planning (SIIP) framework employs Julia, a dynamically typed programming language, to deliver open source tools offering consistent, high-performance data models for utility-scale power systems. The framework also integrates three modeling packages. NREL’s Clayton Barrows said, “The goal of SIIP is to create a common platform for electrical engineers to represent new technologies, computational scientists to develop algorithms, and analysts to conduct applied studies.”

Chatbot Can Explain Apps, Show How They Access Hardware or Data
Aalto University (Finland)
July 1, 2021
Researchers at Finland’s Aalto University, the University of Luxembourg, and Germany’s University of Bayreuth developed a chatbot that can help designers and developers create new apps and explain apps to end-users. Hey GUI (Graphical User Interface) answers questions with images, screenshots, and simple text phrases. Aalto’s Kashyap Todi said, “Hey GUI eliminates the need for coding skills or technical expertise. Anyone can use it to search for information on, for example, which one of my apps is asking for permission to use the camera, or where is the search button on this screen.” The researchers surveyed more than 100 people to determine the most desirable chatbot features, and how users preferred to interact with chatbots. Said Todi, “This is an important first step towards developing chatbots that can help users find information about apps using simple conversations.”

(QESP Editor’s Note: The Australian Government Department of Health gives a daily update on herd immunity.)
“What percentage of the population needs to get vaccinated to have herd immunity to COVID-19?
Herd immunity from immunisations refers to when somewhere around 60% to 70% of the population have some degree of protection. The Government is closely monitoring data on COVID-19 vaccines to understand how herd immunity will work, and what that means for Australia.”
