Captain James Cook: The incredible true story of the World’s Greatest Navigator (QESP Editor’s Note, Highly Recommended! See also EYE OPENERS (GOOD & BAD).

“Captain James Cook, a British Navigator, Cartographer and explorer was one of the pre-eminent sailors and innovators of his age. Now a controversial figure for indigenous cultures who see him as the instigator and symbol of European colonial expansion and genocide; the real James Cook was actually quite a different man to what has been imagined.

Coming from abject poverty in rural Yorkshire England; raised among the pacifist and hard working Quakers, he dreamed of sailing to far off lands in the pacific since he was a boy. Working as an apprentice aboard a grubby Whitby Cat collier, he soon proved himself a hard working and competent sailor. He was later to join the Royal Navy and sail to Canada, taking part in the siege of Louisburg and Quebec, while learning the cartography and surveying skills that were to revolutionise the Navy from that time on.

James Cook circumnavigated the globe three times, charted approximately a third of the unknown coastlines of the globe; beginning with his first voyage aboard the Endeavour, with Naturalists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. He was the first man to sail below, and above the 70th parallel, and his regime of hygiene and fresh food revolutionised the management of scurvy while at sea. For this, he was admitted as a fellow to the Royal Society, as well as raised from the rank of Master, to Lieutenant and then Post Captain -something that would otherwise have caused a scandal among the high society gentry, if it were not for his incredible reputation. In all three of his major voyages, spanning twenty years, he never lost one crew member to the disease, which was an astonishing achievement when compared to a 40% plus death rate that was typical of long range voyages in the time preceding his.

His untimely murder in Hawaii robbed the world of a humble, humane and dedicated leader, whose legacy now risks being tarnished by historical revisionists more focused on political activism than historical reality.

Erratum: Linnaeus was incorrectly labelled as Swiss rather than Swedish. Sincere apologies to my Swedish viewers! Long nights working solitary on this long documentary were bound to cause a slip of the tongue somewhere! Also, the opening sequences show Lenin’s bust rather than Stalin- for which I had no acceptable statue image- apologies for any confusion. Funniest Joke I Ever Heard 1984 Jimmy Stewart

Programmer Jokes

A programmer puts two glasses on his bedside table before going to sleep. A full one, in case he gets thirsty, and an empty one, in case he doesn’t.

classic software JOKES

Programmer’s spouse: Could you go to the store and buy a gallon of milk? If there are eggs get a dozen.

…Programmer returns some while later with a dozen gallons of milk…

Programmer’s spouse: Why on Earth did you buy twelve gallons of milk?

Programmer: Well, there were eggs.

A computer science student is studying under a tree and another pulls up on a flashy new bike.  The first student asks, “Where’d you get that?”

The student on the bike replies, “While I was studying outside, a beautiful girl pulled up on her bike.  She took off all her clothes and said, ‘You can have anything you want’.”

The first student responds, “Good choice!  Her clothes probably wouldn’t have fit you.”

New computer JOKES

Window Problems A blonde texts her husband on a cold winter’s morning: “Windows frozen, won’t open.” Husband texts back: “Gently pour some lukewarm water over it and gently tap edges with hammer.” Wife texts back 5 minutes later: “Computer really messed up now.”

A wife and husband was setting up their computer and the husband makes the password my dick, but the wife fell on the floor laughing because the computer said the password was too short.

New Zealand woman Linda McAlister sat down at her computer, trying to zone out the sound of her two boys running wild during their school holidays. She opened classifieds website Trade Me and began to fill in a listing. The item she was selling? Her husband. John McAlister had left on an impromptu fishing trip, leaving Linda to herd her 4-year-old and 6-year-old boys through their free days, and her mind was made up. He’s 6?1, she wrote in the listing, 37 years old, and a beef farmer. He’s had several previous owners, she admitted, but stays loyal if he’s fed and watered.

Meanwhile, John was marvelling at himself. He’d pulled it off — a solo fishing trip and no harm done. That’s until one of his mates rang to tell him about the listing — his listing. He told Stuff that he couldn’t stop laughing. Twelve bids were made on John, and he couldn’t tear himself away from the screen. One interested bidder asked if John had any vices and Linda replied, well, yes — he does suffer from “socks-on-the-floor-itus, which I have found to be contagious to younger models and unfortunately reoccurring”. The listing was taken down by the site (bids were at $100!) and the couple, of course, remains happily married, though Linda’s advice to spouses thinking of pulling the same Houdini move was to “watch themselves”.

Hope something makes you smile today, folks.

“What is truth?” said jesting Pilate, and would not stay for an answer.

The above quote is from Francis Bacon’s 1625 essay, Of Truth, in which he suggests “it is not the lie that passeth through the mind, but the lie that sinketh in and settleth in it that doth the hurt.”

Havana syndrome

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Havana syndrome is a set of medical symptoms with unknown causes experienced mostly abroad by U.S. government officials and military personnel. The symptoms range in severity from pain and ringing in the ears to cognitive difficulties[2][4] and were first reported in 2016 by U.S. and Canadian embassy staff in HavanaCuba. Beginning in 2017, more people, including U.S. intelligence and military personnel and their families, reported having these symptoms in other places, such as ChinaEurope, and Washington, D.C.[10]

The U.S. Department of State has referred to the events as “unexplained health incidents”,[11][12] while Central Intelligence Agency director William Burns has publicly called them attacks.[13] A 2019 retrospective neuroimaging study of 40 affected diplomats in Cuba published in the medical journal JAMA found evidence that the diplomats had significant brain neuroimaging differences compared to healthy control group members, but it was not able to determine the cause of the observed differences and states that “the clinical importance of these differences is uncertain and may require further study”.[14]
